BD’s BrakeLoc connects to the engine heat riser valve’s control wire, turning the factory heat riser valve into an electronically-controlled exhaust brake. Automatic transmission-equipped models require the use of the BD AutoLoc computer to manage torque converter lock-up values for maximized retarding power. Please contact a BD technical sales representative for details relating to your specific application.
Note that, because the heat riser is activated electronically, there is typically a 2-3 second delay between the time the valve is actuated and engine retarding occurs. While the BrakeLoc is an economical alternative to an exhaust brake, it is NOT intended as a substitute. For quicker, more effective braking, we recommend the vacuum-actuated BD Brake exhaust brake system, which utilizes our Variable Orifice Technology, and won’t stick like the stock heat riser can.
