The FA20 engine, even in stock form, tends to run very high oil temperatures. Add forced induction via a turbo or supercharger and the situation gets even worse. When tracked, FR-S/BRZ's are known to have severe oil cooling issues.
To combat the high oil temperatures you will need to add an oil cooler. Even though the majority of the aftermarket companies opted for the simpler and less expensive air/oil cooler route, we opted for a different approach. We've found that the mounting locations for these type of oil coolers often require the use of extra long oil lines, resulting a greater potential for oil pressure drop as well as introducing more points of possible failure due to the use of very long oil lines. Most air/oil coolers kits will also obstruct air going to the radiator. While this may not be a big issue on NA cars, it is significant on FI cars that already have a large front mount intercooler blocking the radiator.
The other major reason we opted to go with a water/oil cooler route is oil warm up. Even in warmer climates, most owners will find it difficult to get their oil temps up to operating temps. The oil thermostats that are included with these kits will fully open above 185f, but will always be bypassing some oil to the oil cooler regardless of oil temps. This results in oil that generally never gets up to proper operating temps. This problem becomes worse when FI owners opt to run thicker weight oil to provide higher oil pressures for high powered engine builds.
The PTUNING Laminova Water-cooled Oil Cooler System uses the proven Laminova heat exchanger core to transfer heat from the hot oil to the engine's coolant system. This set-up allows the engine's coolant to bring the oil up to operating temps significantly quicker. In addition, when the oil starts getting really hot, the oil cooler will keep the oil temps in check by transferring heat to the cooler engine coolant. Our Oil Cooler System uses the full flow of the cold side radiator outlet to cool down the oil before allow the coolant to make its way to the engine. Our exclusive PnP system uses CNC formed, lightweight aluminum brackets that mount to existing bolt locations within the engine compartment. The lower factory radiator hose is replaced with our custom-molded, high-performance 5-ply silicon hoses and utilizes custom spec spring clamps that will stand the rigors of everyday driving as well as hard track use.
System includes a billet aluminum oil adapter block and spacer vs. the competitors cast aluminum oil sandwich adapter. Also includes ultra-high quality, lightweight, pre-assembled -10 AN oil lines with integrated heat sleeving. Our short run oil lines along with the free-flowing laminar flow path of the Laminova Oil Cooler Core ensures that there will be little to no oil pressure drop through the entire oil cooling system.
Our optional PTUNING Oil Sender adapter features three 1/8" NPT ports to allow you to integrate an oil pressure and/or oil temp sensor and even an oil feed for your turbo system.
